Maybe, with an extremely advanced AI (one capable of distinguishing friends from foes at a glance, locating concealed targets, determining the difference between an enemy and a civilian, and so on and so on) you could replace him, but that then becomes a question of “how much does it cost to implement this AI in all of our tanks, versus the cost of just keeping the third man?” A smart AI would definitely be capable of the acts described there, but absolutely would break the bank to accomplish. He’s crucial on a battlefield because he can entirely handle target selection, while the gunner focuses entirely on eliminating targets. The commander searches for enemy tanks, and, well, commands it. Not the most demanding workload, but it’s a separate job because… He’ll also search for enemy tanks when not performing the first few tasks. The gunner handles targeting, selecting which round will be used for the job, aiming it, and firing. He has to look for possible obstacles, manoeuvre around them, be aware of threats and position the tank in cover, etc etc. The driver can focus on, well, driving, which is a complex job on any battlefield. Real tanks have a three man crew (4 without an autoloader) because that’s the most efficient way to split the workload: I’m not sure that really is a benefit, though.
